How to Get a Remote Job From Nigeria: The Essentials

A free guide to which remote jobs are really open to you, the CV that gets read, and how to stay safe

Thousands of Nigerians now work remotely for companies abroad. Many more apply for months and hear nothing. This free guide explains why, and gives you the basics to apply smarter: how foreign companies hire in Nigeria, how to read a listing, what an international CV looks like, and how to spot fake recruiters. The full guide is Land Your First Remote Job From Nigeria.

1. Remote job or freelancing?

Remote job (employment) Freelancing
Who you work for One company, as part of a team Several clients
How you're paid Salary or fixed monthly fee Per hour, per project or monthly retainer
How you're hired Applications, recruiters, interviews Proposals, profiles, referrals
Key documents CV, LinkedIn, cover letter Portfolio, proposals, marketplace profile

Both are legitimate. This guide is about remote jobs. For freelancing as a virtual assistant, see How to Become a Virtual Assistant in Nigeria.

2. How foreign companies hire people in Nigeria

A company abroad usually can't just add you to its payroll. It uses one of three routes:

Route What it means for you
Employer of record (EOR) A platform legally employs you in Nigeria for the company. Usually paid in naira through payroll, with tax and pension deducted
Contractor agreement You invoice the company (often through a platform) as an independent contractor. Often paid in dollars; you handle your own tax and pension
Their own Nigerian entity Some companies have a registered company in Nigeria and hire you directly

Knowing these routes helps you understand offers and ask the right questions.

3. Reading a remote listing: is it really open to you?

"Remote" doesn't mean "anywhere". Many listings are remote within one country, for legal and tax reasons. That isn't personal; it's paperwork.

The three-minute eligibility check:

  1. Location line: does it say "Remote (US)", "Remote, UK only", "EMEA", "Africa", "Anywhere" or list countries? Only apply if Nigeria is clearly included or the region genuinely covers it.
  2. Time zone: does it require hours you can actually work? Lagos is UTC+1 all year, while the UK and US change their clocks.
  3. Work authorisation: if the form asks whether you're authorised to work in a country where you don't live, answer truthfully. A false answer can cost you the offer later.

If unclear, it's fine to politely ask the recruiter: "Could you confirm whether this role is open to candidates based in Nigeria?"

4. Why your CV isn't getting replies

Most remote applications go through an applicant tracking system (ATS), software that stores, sorts and searches applications. Recruiters then search and skim. Common reasons Nigerian CVs get skipped:

5. The international CV in one page

FULL NAME
Target Job Title | 2–3 core skills or tools

SUMMARY

Before: "Responsible for attending to customers' complaints." After: "Resolved about 55 customer issues a day by phone and email, keeping first-contact resolution around 80%."

Use a simple single-column layout, standard headings and a text-based PDF. Then match the keywords: copy the job description, highlight its tools and skills, and add the ones you genuinely have, in the listing's own words.

6. LinkedIn basics recruiters notice

7. Recruitment scams to avoid

Fake recruiters target Nigerian job seekers constantly. Real employers:

Verify any recruiter by checking the role on the company's own careers page and contacting the company through its official website.

8. Your 7-day starter plan

Day Task
1 Choose one target role (for example customer support, sales, operations, marketing, design, data, engineering or project management)
2 Find 10 listings for that role and note which are genuinely open to Nigeria
3 Highlight the repeated tools and skills across those listings
4 Rebuild your CV in the one-page international format
5 Rewrite your LinkedIn headline and About
6 Apply to 3 eligible roles with tailored CVs
7 Send a short message to the recruiter for each role
